The King is Coming….

Israel is surrounded.  Hezbollah declares, “if Jordan is attacked missiles will rain down on Tel Aviv.”  Russian dissident scientist says, “there is still no hope for the future.”  China lands a jet fighter on their first air craft carrier in show of force.  America quickly declines as world power.  If any Christian declares that Jesus return is imminent, he’s labeled a kook.

Well, I’m not afraid to say it.  The King is coming…and very soon.  The last ten years have demonstrated enough examples, warnings, and prophetic answers to show clearly who is in charge of this puny little planet.  An old man thousands of years ago was promised his family and nation would never perish.  A future of worldwide repentance and love will never happen.  All the signs are in place.

“But do not let this one fact escape your notice, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.  The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance.  But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, in which the heavens will pass away with a roar and the elements will be destroyed with intense heat, and the earth and its works will be burned up.  Since all these things are to be destroyed in this way, what sort of people ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God…therefore, beloved since you look for these things, be DILIGENT to be found in Him in peace, spotless, and blameless and regard the patience of our Lord to be salvation….For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the boice of the archangel, and with the trumpet of God…and we will all be caught up together with Him in the clouds…and this do, knowing the time, that it is already the hour for you to awaken from sleep; for now salvation is nearer to us than when we believed.”

Only the Lords return will change the rapid direction of this world.  Pull your family close to you.  Live truth, love, kindness before your family and in your world of influence.  The King is coming….

John Dewey Predicted an Obama Victory

If John Dewey were alive today he would he would pat himself on the back for predicting a Obama victory in the Presidential election.  John Dewey, a legendary education leader at the turn of the 20th Century and one of the “Seven Men Who Rule the World from the Grave”, forecast the coming domination of secularism and its promise of bliss.

Dewey along with numerous intellectual thinkers formulated the concept that a system of public education would advance the American culture better and more efficient.  Dewey’s piece in the education paradigm shift of the early 20th century has been lost in the understanding of the current demise of pubic education and the culture at large.

In the 1920’s Dewey along with his fellow humanists proposed and implemented the ideas of a New religion and recognized the most advantageous arena to promote the ideas was in a public school system free from the constraints of metaphysical influence.

In his book “Education Today” Dewey states,”I believe that it is the business of every one interested in education to insist upon the school as the primary and most effective instrument of social progress and reform.”

What Dewey and the other humanists  posited was that secularism was the New Religion. It would replace present religion and it would establish its cathedrals in the public schools and eventually in Colleges and Universities. Again in “Education Today” Dewey states, “In performing this service, it is the business to do what they can (officials, parents, teachers) to prevent all public educational agencies from being employed in ways which inevitably impede the recognition of the spiritual impact of science and of democracy, and hence of that type of religion which will be the fine flower of the modern spirit’s achievement.”

Roy Woods Sellars writing in 1928 provided  fodder for Dewey’s claims. In his book, “Religion Coming of Age” Sellars quotes E Burdette Backus; “…the signs are clear that humanity has struck its tents and is again on the march toward a new religious faith which I dare to believe will provide us with a religion greater than Christianity, greater than any historic faith of the past…”

Later in the same work Sellars declares, ”Now I am convinced that the humanistic religion into which Christianity will gradually be transformed will correct this mistake.”

In 1930 a former Baptist minister Charles Francis Potter wrote in his work, Humanism a New Religion “Education is that a most powerful ally of Humanism, and every American public school is a school of “Humanism”.  What can the theistic Sunday-schools, meeting for an hour once a week, and teaching only a fraction of the children, do to stem the tide of a five-day program of humanistic teaching?”

Dewey was a piece of the perfect storm of the late 19th and early 20th century.  The education piece of the paradigm shift was crucial for the ideas to take hold and progress to a formidable influence.  Dewey keenly recognized that Christianity must be replaced in order for humanism to gain a foot hold.  In his famous work “A Common Faith” in 1930 Dewey states, “Here are all the elements for a religious faith that shall not be confined to sect, class, or race.  Such a faith has always been implicitly the common faith of mankind.  It remains to make it explicit and militant.”

Dewey spent the rest of his life  seeing that the public education classroom became the training ground for the new religion. Over five generations now, the Religion of Humanism has gained total control of  education  in this country.  Higher Education provides the finishing touches and releases into the culture unknowing robots filled intellectually, emotionally, and spiritually with the belief that man is the highest order and his happiness and the pursuit of that happiness is all that matters and is to be sought at all costs.  All means justify the end of happiness and personal actualization.  Dewey would herald Obama’s re-election as the proof positive that without the classroom at all levels, Humanism would not succeed.

I sense the disappointment and despair at the continuance of the present political leadership.  It is time to acknowledge that over one hundred years of training and indoctrination on a massive scale will not be changed quickly, certainly not in one or two elections.  It took five generations to bring this country to this place.  Is there any hope?

I believe it is all about the local community now.  It is about families that did not stray from Jesus and the Bible.  It is about young parents instilling in their children the tenets and truths of the Holy Scriptures. It is about those families continuing to influence neighborhoods one friend at a time.  Time has destroyed the ability for large-scale influence in this society.  But the flame of truth in each individual heart must never go out.  Capture the joy of living a life of trust and obedience to the call on each of our lives.  The enemy of our souls will never triumph.  Hold on to that hope.

I hope He doesn’t remove His hand…

Once again the country has chosen to dismiss the Creator of our souls.  To support someone who views life with disdain and disrespect.  A leader who purposely chooses to serve creatures rather than the Creator.  Just a bit over half of this nation now has chosen to dismiss God as a presence in this world.

This is about a worldview.  Every worldview begins with a theology.  When a majority chooses a worldview that rejects the Creator the authority of the Universe at some point reminds the creatures that He is Justice; a flood, destruction of cities, a Savior to save man from His wrath.  The wrath is coming.

It is not about a President or an election it is about a worldview that rejects Absolute Truth.  It is about a King who promised to bless those who bless Him and His people and to destroy those that abandon both.  When the Power chooses to remove the protective hand evil fills the vacuum.  It is evil’s desire to destroy the glory of God.  This nation, once embraced the Creator.  This nation once revered and worshipped the Creator and built its foundation on Absolute Truth.  It has slowly turned its back for a hundred years now.  Is this the point of no return?  Those who still believe in Truth, in  a Creator has the final say, keep praying.  Keep holding on to Hope.   Keep doing right for your children.  Recognize the pain in the world and embrace it.  I fear what is coming.

“But God’s angry displeasure erupts as acts of human mistrust and wrongdoing and lying accumulate, as people try to put a shroud over truth.  But the basic reality of God is plain enough.  Open your eyes and there it is!  By taking a long and thoughtful look at what God has created, people have always been able to see what their eyes as such can’t see: eternal power, for instance, and the mystery of his divine being.  So nobody has a good excuse.  What happened was this: People knew God perfectly well, but when they didn’t treat him like God, refusing to worship Him, they trivialized themselves into silliness and confusion so that there was neither sense nor direction in their lives.  They pretended to know it all, but were illiterate regarding life.  They traded the glory of God who holds the whole world in his hands for cheap figurines you can buy at any roadside stand.

So God said, in effect, “If that’s what you want, that’s what you get.  It wasn’t long before they were living In a pig pen, smeared with filth, filthy inside and out. And all because they traded the true God for a false god, and worshiped the god they made instead of the God who made them—the God we bless, the God who blesses us. And oh yes!

Worse followed.  Refusing to know God, they soon didn’t know how to be human either—women didn’t know how to be women, men didn’t know how to be men.  Sexually confused, they abused and defiled one another, women with women, men with men—all lust no love.  And then they paid for it, oh how they paid for it—emptied of God and love, godless and loveless wretches.

Since they didn’t bother to acknowledge God, God quit bothering them and let them run loose.  And then all hell broke loose: rampant evil, grabbing and grasping, vicious backstabbing They made life hell on earth with their envy, wanton killing, bickering, and cheating. Look at them: mean-spirited, venomous, fork-tongued, God-bashers, Bullies, Swaggers, insufferable windbags.  They keep inventing new ways of wrecking lives.  They ditch their parents when they get in the way.  Stupid, slimy, cruel, cold-blooded.  And it’s not as if they don’t know better.  They know perfectly well they’re spitting in God’s face.  And they don’t care—worse they hand out prizes to those who do the worst things best!

I pray the Creator has not lifted His hand just yet.

Whose Election is this…really?

Election Day 2012.  I am wondering how this day will unfold.  30 years ago this county answered this question.  Do you believe that what grows in a woman’s unterus is a human being?  It is a very simple yes or no question.  The country said…no.  Every election since, God has been asking the same question.  Today will be no different.  In God’s Kingdom the economy, foreign policy, welfare, infra-structure, education, the military, doesn’t matter at all…for God, it is all about life and death.

Today’s results will shape a man made world of opinion.  Whatever the outcome, this country chooses disobedience.  Leaders come and go…life continues.  The King has the final say.  Every day this world chooses disobedience is one day closer. There is no election in the King’s world. Life and love rule in His world. I write with trepidation concerned about a man made election…fearing evil will gain an even stronger foothold. I fear for my children and grandchildren in my weak earthy mind.

Where will this be 24 hours from now? The King will be where He has always been. Life will be sacred as it has always been. Love will be available as it has always been. I hold on to the hope He waits just a little longer…for my grandkids.

“Choose you this day whom you will serve…As for me and my house…we will serve the Lord…”

October in New England

Our Lord is so kind.  A friend invited me to Upstate New York to share with his community, hope for healing from sexual abuse.  Upstate New York in October is amazing.  I have heard the colors are beautiful.  It’s true, and the best way to appreciate it is to witness it in person.  Not only have I enjoyed sharing for our Lord, I have experienced the beauty first hand.  That is so kind.

I walked through the campus of Williams College yesterday in Williamstown, Massachusetts.  The colors enhanced the majesty of the little town and campus.  Williams was founded in the late 1700s. A forgotten fact of history is that the Haystack revival in 1806 began at Williams College. The revival led Samuel Mills and four other men to launch the first foreign missionaries to go with the gospel.

Today, Williams College is known as the most expensive college in the country; to the tune of 70K a year.  I walked through the campus and wondered what do you get for a quarter of a million dollars in return?  Williams is a long way from its roots as a religious institution.  Some say it ranks with the leading Ivy schools in embracing liberalism.  It is comforting to know that grace is free.  Man’s knowledge has erected a magnificent institution surrounded by the beauty of nature, and yet inside the walls there is little if any truth from the leaders.  There is a lot of capital moving through Williamstown, but so little hope.

I also had the privilege to share with pastors and counselors yesterday about the epidemic of sexual abuse in all communities.  I challenged the pastors to give one Sunday a year to a sermon on the nature, prevalence, and damage caused by abuse.  On Tuesday evening I was part of a panel in Albany, New York that was addressing pedophilia in a large Christian denomination.  Just last May allegations emerged of abuse by clergy within a local church.  In just four months the survivors are coming out and sharing incidents of abuse.   The magnitude is overwhelming…heartbreaking.  The good news is that the community came together to acknowledge the issue in a public forum. The greater news is during the two hours they began to heal.  Acknowledging the truth; speaking out both as individuals and a community; having the courage to fight the shame and criticism and the sparks of healing emerged.  I was so blessed to see in person what I believe is the need across this country in every community.  The silence must be addressed.  Too many are living in shame and too many are perpetrating evil on innocent children.

I have a few more days and opportunities in the Albany area to share and witness the joy of hope.  This can happen in every community.  A pastor came to me after lunch yesterday and said, “Bill, you can have a Sunday morning service at our church any time.”  Every time I have the chance to share a little I gain a little more healing.  Isn’t our Lord kind?

It’s Always Good to Go Home…

I had the privilege to speak to two classes at Wheaton College last week.  In 1967 I was a camper at the Crusader Sports camps at Wheaton.  From 1973-1977 I was a student at the College.  From 1982-1991 I coached the Men’s Basketball Crusaders.  This week, 2012 I returned to speak to students preparing to do ministry.

I am 57 years old and I have attended over 10,000 chapels, church services, club meetings, evangelistic meetings, missionary conferences, marriage conferences, youth conferences and never once did I hear what I presented to the students last week.   The response was identical to what I experience across the country with the message of hope for healing from childhood sexual abuse…subdued silence.

This time speaking at such a familiar venue, I left energized to the simple truth that sharing the hope of healing may just be what Jill and I have left to do.   Those that hear the message cannot avoid the truth that confronting the past pain and acknowledging the truth of being a survivor is the first step toward healing.  Statistics tell us that 25-50% of individuals in any given group are survivors of sexual abuse.  That means that there may have been as many as 14 in the classes last week that are survivors and another good chance most of those have never told their story.  Everywhere I go groups shares how it is the first time they have heard this message in a public forum.

There is so much do with this issue.  There is so little willingness to listen, acknowledge, and engage.  I am grateful that Dave Sveen invited me to share with just a few that may hear the call to enter this world of ministry…the world of the broken.  I will pray it is so.

NCAA-Penn State rush to punish

Remember when you were in school and that one kid acted up while the teacher’s back was turned.  There was an eruption of laughter and the teacher spun around too late to witness the offense.  In frustration the teacher announces, “Alright, unless whoever is responsible for this steps forward, all of you will miss recess today.”  Immediately and anxious quiet descends across the room and the teacher’s pet speaks up saying, “wait, that’s not fair, why should all of us suffer because of one person?”

Penn State handed out and was handed punishments this week for the behavior of Jerry Sandusky and the other participants in the sexual abuse scandal. The Penn State nation is being punished for the behavior and actions of a few.  There is no argument that penalties and consequences are absolute in this case.  However, there appears to have been little time given to careful consideration of the outcomes in the grand scheme.   Instead, so called justice was dealt out as quickly as possible so the Penn State community and culture may go back to being “normal”. After all this is just a  as if this is something that rarely happens.  It reflects panic not wisdom.

Penn State, like every other academic institution aspires to be in existence to educate and prepare adolescents for future roles in society. Every school is founded with an academic mission.  Extracurricular programs are just that, extra. So eliminating one, let’s say football, would not be a violation of the mission of the institution.  It appears neither the NCAA nor Penn State University understand the essence of abuse. The court system has spoken and Jerry Sandusky received what he justly deserves, life in prison.  Beyond that there are consequences for those that covered up.  The administrators lost their occupations, maybe forever.  Jerry Sandusky’s family will live in disgrace the rest of their lives.  Joe Paterno’s legacy is tarnished and his family left searching for answers and grace.

Penn State chose to go further in erasing football records for an arbitrary number of games and years. How does erasing the football records of Joe Paterno provide restitution? Joe Paternos disgrace is more than punishment enough.  Removing his records is a momentary effort to deflect the shame from the University.  If the University and the NCAA were serious about addressing and advocating for a long term awareness of abuse then eliminating the football program going forward is a more sound solution.

Four years of sanctions and millions of dollars will be forgotten quickly.  New generations will come and go from Penn State.  The football program will return.  But, if in moving forward the University eliminated football, there would forever be a reminder that childhood sexual abuse is an offense the institution will never tolerate again. That would demand courage.

Penn State could use this moment in time to lead the country in awareness and prevention of a plague that has and continues to ruin the lives of millions every single day.  Instead, it appears they wish to get by this as quickly as possible, give the survivors some compensation, make some public admissions of guilt and move on.  That has been the process and protocol forever. If the perpetrators and survivors will have to live with the dysfunction of abuse the rest of their lives, why shouldn’t the University as well?

Sandusky…Penn State…hiding in the trees…

“Then the eyes of both of them were opened and they realized that they were naked.”

The official investigative report came out today from former FBI director Louis Freeh regarding the details of the Jerry Sandusky case and the response of Penn State University officials to the allegations between 1998 and 2001.

It is a 267 page report demonstrating clearly the enormous and complicated struggle with the issue of childhood sexual abuse.  Jerry Sandusky is in prison and will never be released; that is justice.  However, the fallout will go on for decades.  Consider just a few of the implications:  Joe Paterno’s legacy of 50 years will be forever tarnished.  Penn State University will be besieged by law suits and devastating publicity; public trust is crippled.  The number of boys directly abused by Jerry Sandusky may never be known and each of them is scarred for life.

Multiply the survivors by the members of their families that have suffered with them, it is well into the hundreds. Mr. Sandusky’s family; Mr. McQueary and his family; the Paterno family; the individuals and families of the Penn State Athletic Department and Administration and the list goes on and on. The damage will manifest itself for years and through generations.

And still, the most disturbing part of the report is the intentional efforts to cover, deny, and silence.  Here is an example from the report.  John Seasock, who had a contract to provide counseling services, did an evaluation on the boy abused in the May 1998 incident with Sandusky.

“During the meeting with Seasock the boy described the incident with Sandusky. Given that the boy did not feel forced to engage in any activity and did not voice discomfort to Sandusky, Seasock opined that ‘there seems to be no incident which could be termed as sexual abuse, nor did there appear to be any sequential pattern of logic and behavior which is usually consistent with adults who have difficulty with sexual abuse of children.’ Seasock’s report ruled out that the boy ‘had been placed in a situation where he was being groomed for future sexual victimization.’ Seasock recommended that someone speak with Sandusky about what is acceptable with young children and explained, ‘the intent of the conversation with Mr. Sandusky is not to cast dispersion upon his actions but to help him stay out of such gray area situations in the future.”

Translation:  Mr. Seasock a “licensed” counselor was either covering or clueless.  Never is there a mention of the validity of the boy’s story.  Never is there a sense of concern or compassion for trauma the boy suffered.  The boy reported it to his mother, she reported it to the school and what followed was a series of denials including the recognition of the severity of the behavior; affirmation that the perpetrator just made a poor choice in judgment; and fear of the ramifications for the University and its football program must be protected.

The incident remained out of the public eye for three years when Michael McQueary witnessed Jerry Sandusky raping a boy in a locker room shower.  Once again, the players were informed of the behavior, this time with Joe Paterno the first to hear.  Once again, FEAR gripped everyone involved and those with the authority and power to protect and save the vulnerable worked instead to protect themselves and the institution.

Before casting aspersions on the Penn State community, see this for what it is; another reflection of the power of the enemy of all men’s souls, to destroy the glory of Gods design for human sexuality. The Penn State community demonstrated what all communities do in this situation.  Hide in shame.  It’s right there in Genesis 3:7; “Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew they were naked, and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loin coverings”.

The enemy attacks man’s dignity every single day and his most potent weapon is destroying human sexuality, the most personal of all human emotions and experiences.  If it can be exposed in a manner for which it was not designed the immediate reaction is shame and cover.  In the process, the victim is shamed for revealing, the perpetrator shamed for the behavior, the culture shamed for allowing the behavior and all the time nothing is said or done until it reaches a tipping point.  Once the sensationalism dies down, it’s back to the status quo.  This is just something we will not address or discuss.

Where are we people?  It would be so comfortable to believe that Jerry Sandusky is an isolated aberration.  It would be so easy to just dismiss this as an isolated incident that never makes its way into the faith community.  How many more Jerry Sandusky’s will it take to bring us to our knees?  When will we come out from behind the trees and face our Lord, who is asking, “Where are you?”

The glorious gift of human sexuality is the greatest design and gift given man by his creator.  It is time we stood up to the enemy and said enough. People…please embrace the power given to us by our Savior to keep the enemy in its place. Please stand up in our communities and shout the message of hope.  Please consider the pain and suffering we are allowing to millions by our silence.  Please step up.

Sandusky Guilty…Hope wins…

Guilty…Jerry Sandusky, guilty on 45 of 48 counts of child sexual abuse.  He will be sentenced to jail for the rest of his life.  A man influenced by evil will not be able to hurt again.

I viewed the proceedings on television with ambivalence. Ambivalence is one of the severe consequences of childhood sexual abuse.  Ambivalence is to be torn in two with two apparently contradictory emotions that are happening simultaneously. In this case the satisfaction of justice brought to an evil man contradicting the dread of the memories of my own abuse.  I imagine the boys who brought the charges feel the same tonight. Ambivalence is only one of the consequences survivors battle with for life; usually in silence. Healing from sexual abuse is more difficult than the actual abuse because it continues for life.

Sandusky is gone.  This is another wake up call.  There are millions and millions of survivors out there and only a minuscule number have received the help they need to heal.  Only a few have felt the safety to share the horrible story. Sandusky shined light on the most prevalent and destructive behavior in this world.  I fear, that in a few weeks the issue will return to the shadows, the perpetrators will return to evil and shame and fear will return the society to status quo.  We just aren’t going to recognize it or talk about it.

On the other hand, I am invigorated to continue the fight to tell the good news of HOPE.  There is hope for healing, there is hope for joy, there is hope for laughter, and there is hope for a voice.  I will continue to share that good news wherever I go with whoever will listen. BE SILENT NO MORE!!

Will anyone reach out to the broken?

ImageWhy does it appear on the whole there is so little desire to truly address the brokenness in this world? Is the world of today similar to that of Isaiah’s time when the people begged him to “tell them lies, stories, and illusions” Isa. 30:9-11 to avoid the pain of brokenness?

Universally, every human being is broken in sin and dependent on God for redemption. It is the degrees of brokenness and the approach to healing where I struggle. Broken people of differing degrees sit in churches every Sunday across the country.  Most of the brokenness results from broken relationships.  Most of the brokenness is kept silent from week to week and goes unnoticed. Since it is silent, a perception exists there are no problems.  Makes it much easier to ignore.  Life is not much different outside the church buildings.

Brokenness is about shame.  The brokennest of the broken are not going to stroll to the institutional church on Sunday.  The broken ones that do manage to make it are yearning for healing from the brokenness.  Is the society and the Institutional church equipped to care for the broken in its midst?  Further, is there a desire?

In the brokenness of Sexual Abuse silence is the absolute.  Ignoring is the method of choice for healing.  This brokenness is as prevalent inside the institutional church as out. Across the society, very few reach out to the wounded.   Look for a graduate school counseling program across the country and you will rarely if ever find a single course in any Masters Degree Counseling program that addresses the prevalence, the consequences, and the methods of healing.  They don’t exist.  In the Institutional churches around the world, do you know of any that have a specific healing program for the sexually broken in their structure?  Have you heard of any sexual abuse healing programs through public agencies, community service?  Are you aware of intervention programs?  There are myriads of recovery programs for every ill and foible known, but do you know of any for sexual abuse?

Sexual abuse is the core diagnosis for much of the brokenness in this world.  The brokenness doesn’t just affect the survivor.  The numbers are multiplied by the perpetrator, the family, and the community.  Violence, substance abuse, pornography, broken families, depression, and suicide most of the time can be traced to a history of childhood sexual abuse.

This is the enemy’s greatest weapon.  The shame generated by perpetrated sexual harm.  It’s right there in Genesis 3; “But the Lord called to the man and said to him, “Where are you?” And he said, “I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked, and I hid myself.”  He said, “Who told you that you were naked?”

Brokenness is the fear of being exposed.  It is present in every human being, in every community, and in every institution.  Shame and silence are the most powerful tools of the enemy.  So, how can the society, including the institutional church do what is expected, “care for the broken, bind up the wounded, provide for widows and orphans when all appear unwilling to even acknowledge the prevalence?

Courage.  Courage to admit we are standing naked before God and our fellow brothers and sisters.  Courage to speak out.  Courage to reach out where the broken are.  Courage requires trust and vulnerability.  Broken trust initiated shame and allows it to continue; vulnerability to reach out for help where healing begins.  The courage to walk with another broken soul for life.  A daunting task to be sure.  Ignoring and hiding is not the answer.  Ask Adam and Eve.
